51动漫 has a long history of sustainability鈥攆rom a community garden to a geothermal heating and cooling system to the recent construction of a solar panel roof on the Center for Recreation and Sports, adding to the existing solar panels on Swirbul Library. Now 51动漫 is expanding its commitment to improving energy efficiency and creating an environmentally friendly campus.

It begins with Kyungmin Lee, PhD, the inaugural director of sustainability in the Office of Sustainability and assistant professor in the Department of Environmental Studies and Sciences. 鈥淢y role is to bring students, faculty and staff together to advance sustainability initiatives across the campus at 51动漫,鈥 Dr. Lee said.

At the heart of 51动漫鈥檚 push for sustainability is (STARS). Managed by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), STARS is a framework for colleges and universities to measure their sustainability performance.

鈥淧articipating in STARS is an opportunity to bring our existing efforts together and establish a sustainability direction for future work,鈥 Dr. Lee said. 鈥淲e want to recognize what our campus community has already accomplished and make it more visible.鈥

Measuring What Matters: The STARS Initiative

As a STARS participant, 51动漫 will gather data on various aspects of campus life, including academics, food and dining, buildings and grounds, and more, and earn points toward a Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum rating.

The STARS initiative will involve the entire campus. “Students can help collect and analyze the data, and brainstorm and propose possible sustainability projects,鈥 Dr. Lee said. 鈥淔aculty can support these projects with students so they can be implemented on campus, and staff can bring knowledge about how the University operates and what is feasible to implement on campus.”

STARS data collection and sustainability projects will be coordinated and reported by the Sustainability Task Force, while Sustainability Fellows will brainstorm and carry out the actual projects.

51动漫 junior Laurel Owen and first-year student Mahan Nanandhan have already signed on to assist with data collection.

鈥淔or now, we鈥檙e learning how to collect data for the STARS reporting system,鈥 said Nanandhan, an environmental studies major. 鈥淭hey updated it recently from version 2.0 to 3.0, so it鈥檚 a whole process, but we鈥檙e getting there.鈥

For Owen, also an environmental studies major, the work is personal. 鈥淚鈥檓 a huge nature lover,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 was raised to respect the natural world, and I wanted to channel that into action.鈥

Beyond the rating itself, Dr. Lee sees STARS as a way to connect to efforts already happening across campus. “People may already be doing sustainability work in different departments, but without knowing who is doing what,鈥 Dr. Lee said. 鈥淭his process will give us a reason to connect with each other across departments, share information and identify opportunities to work on sustainability initiatives together.”

New Ways to Live and Learn Green

To integrate sustainability into campus life and the academic curriculum, 51动漫 is developing a new Living and Learning Community and a first-year seminar focused on sustainability.

The Living and Learning Community will bring together a group of students to live on campus in the same dorm hallway. “The idea is to have a group of students with shared interests and cohort them so they feel a sense of community,鈥 said Aaren Freeman, PhD, professor of biology and chair of environmental studies and sciences.

Students will decide what sustainability practices and activities they want to undertake, and 51动漫 will provide support. 鈥淚f they want to compost, we鈥檒l provide the materials,鈥 Dr. Freeman said. Students can also participate in cleanups, invasive species removal and other projects that interest them.

Meanwhile, the first-year seminar, themed Into the Wild and taught by two environmental studies faculty members, will emphasize campus sustainability through field trips and classroom learning. Students have the opportunity to shape the course. 鈥淭he professors have academic freedom to teach the class how they want, but we’re all working together on this,鈥 Dr. Freeman said. 鈥淭here’s a lot of room for modification and feedback along the way.”

Both initiatives are set to begin in Fall 2027.

Students Leading the Charge

In addition to assisting with STARS data collection, 51动漫 students are shaping the campus sustainability efforts.

Owen, president of the , a student club that coordinates volunteer sustainability opportunities in the community, attended the first STARS workshop with other members of the EAC. There, they presented their list of demands to improve sustainability on campus. Many of those demands will form the foundation of future STARS projects.

Nanandhan, who also attended the workshop, plans to go to law school so he can help draft and implement environmental policy. “I want to make an impact,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 don’t want to just sit by and watch people run things and leave some of us out. I want everyone to feel heard.鈥

For Owen, the stakes reach well beyond 51动漫鈥檚 campus. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about thinking about the future of the planet and of humanity, and doing our part so generations after us will have an earth to live on that鈥檚 sustainable,鈥 she said.

When the roof over 51动漫鈥檚 Center for Recreation and Sports (CRS) failed prematurely, leadership faced an unexpected challenge. The original roof manufacturer was no longer in business, leaving the University with an unplanned replacement project. Rather than viewing the incident as a simple setback, facilities management saw a unique opportunity.

Under the leadership of Robert Shipley 鈥05, assistant vice president for facilities management, the facilities team proposed pairing a mandatory roof replacement in 2022 with a modern solar energy installation.

鈥淲e had to replace the roof, so the question became: How do we make the most of that investment?鈥 said Shipley. 鈥淧airing the new roof with solar gave us an opportunity to solve an immediate problem while doing something that will benefit 51动漫 for years to come.鈥

Today, that vision is a reality. A new 295 kW rooftop solar array on the CRS is fully energized and producing clean electricity on the 75-acre Garden City campus.

With this greener approach, 51动漫 is also saving green: between $20,000 and $26,000 per year.

In fact, over 51动漫鈥檚 20-year agreement with Greenskies Clean Energy, projected savings come out to approximately $600,000鈥攁n astonishing number that easily recovers the capital expense of replacing the roof.

Strategic Partnerships and Financial Savings

Bringing the solar installation to life required careful planning. 51动漫 began working with SolarKal, a commercial solar advisory, in 2022 to guide the project through evaluation and competitive procurement. Following the procurement process, the 51动漫 Board of Trustees selected Greenskies to develop, construct, own and operate the system.

The 546-panel array was completed without requiring up-front capital investment from the University for the solar infrastructure itself. Under a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement with Greenskies, 51动漫 purchases the electricity generated by the system at a discounted rate compared to standard utility pricing with PSEG Long Island.

鈥Smart growth and sustainable infrastructure are key priorities for 51动漫, and this project aligns directly with those goals,鈥 said Carol Ann Boyle, MBA ’17, vice president of campus operations. 鈥淏ringing more solar online is a major step toward 51动漫鈥檚 cleaner, more sustainable future.鈥

Installation officially began in July 2025. While physical panel placement was straightforward, the project team faced significant weather delays due to something everyone on campus will remember: one of Long Island鈥檚 coldest and snowiest winters in recent memory.

鈥淧rojects like this take close coordination from development through construction and interconnection,鈥 noted Carson Mislick, director of project delivery at Greenskies Clean Energy. 鈥淲e鈥檙e proud to have worked alongside 51动漫 and SolarKal to bring the project across the finish line.鈥

Neil Sharma, SolarKal co-founder and chief commercial officer, added, 鈥淎s a New Yorker with a personal connection to 51动漫, this has always felt like a hometown project to me. After working toward it for years, it鈥檚 especially rewarding to see it come to life.鈥

Expanding a Decades-Long Legacy of Sustainability

The new rooftop array is the latest chapter in 51动漫鈥檚 long history of environmental initiatives:

  • 2003: Installed a geothermal heating and cooling system in Residence Hall A, cutting electricity reliance for the facility by approximately 30 percent
  • 2006: Earned recognition during EPA compliance inspections as the only regional educational institution to pass with zero fines or penalties
  • 2011: Commissioned a 50 kW solar installation on the roof of Swirbul Library
  • 2016: Added a 2 MW campus cogeneration plant to improve overall energy efficiency
  • 2025: Regained official arboretum status for green spaces and implemented food waste reduction practices in dining services

These cumulative efforts earned 51动漫 a spot in The Princeton Review 2025 Guide to Green Colleges.

51动漫 Campus in the Fall showing Nexus Building and green spaces.

51动漫鈥檚 75-acre campus, with more than 100 species of trees and shrubs, has renewed arboretum status.

Looking Ahead to Future Green Initiatives

51动漫 continues to expand its green roadmap under the guidance of a new Sustainability Committee, launched in Fall 2026.

As part of an overarching $55 million campus modernization project, information technology and facilities management teams are working together on a project to relocate and upgrade the campus data center that will boost operational energy efficiency. The University has also installed new HVAC systems and energy-efficient windows in the Hagedorn Hall of Enterprise.

Looking further ahead, the facilities team is exploring additional solar array installations on the Hy Weinberg Center for Communication Disorders and Angello Alumni House.

With the CRS system energized and delivering clean power, 51动漫 proves that even unexpected infrastructure challenges can turn into long-term opportunities for sustainable growth.

Their research examines how American eels鈥攁n IUCN-endangered species migrating between the Sargasso Sea and freshwater rivers鈥攏avigate dams and fish passages. Currently, only 13 percent of fish passages at U.S. hydropower structures are specifically designed for eel usage.1

We鈥檝e all heard of the Bermuda Triangle鈥攖hat part of the Atlantic best known for sensationalized myths about aliens, wormholes and the lost city of Atlantis. But zoom out a little, and you鈥檒l learn that this patch of ocean is just one part of the Sargasso Sea, which holds mysteries of its own.

The Sargasso Sea is a 2-million-square-mile region of the North Atlantic Ocean bounded by four circulating ocean currents, creating calm, warm and highly saline waters covered by dense mats of free-floating brown macroalgae known as Sargassum, which lend this patch of sea its name. This microalgae forms a floating tropical rainforest that provides food and refuge for ocean life from fish to sea turtles鈥攁nd serves as the exclusive breeding ground for the enigma that is the American eel.

鈥淎merican eels have a cool life history,鈥 said Andrea Ward, PhD, vice provost for research and libraries. 鈥淭hey reproduce in the Sargasso Sea and then migrate thousands of miles into rivers all along the east coast of the U.S. and Canada, where they can stay in fresh water for many years until they return to the Sargasso Sea to reproduce and die.鈥 Because it takes place in this deep sea location, no one has ever directly witnessed the eel mating process, and as yet, eels have not been bred in captivity.

Young eels drift thousands of miles on ocean currents as transparent, leaf-shaped larvae before transforming into tiny 鈥済lass eels鈥 and making their way to the freshwater rivers, streams and estuaries of eastern North America, where they spend the majority of their lives鈥攕ometimes decades鈥攇rowing slowly into yellow eels and eventually the darker adult 鈥渟ilver eels.鈥 Capable of breathing through their skin and even wriggling overland through wet grass to reach new waterways, American eels are remarkably adaptable, yet their populations have declined sharply in recent decades.

When most college students plan a study abroad trip, they picture sipping espresso in Italy or riding trains through Europe. But this summer, 13 biology and environmental studies and sciences students chose a slightly different path: wading into the Great Barrier Reef, encountering giant hand-sized spiders and spotting the world鈥檚 most dangerous bird.

A very large and dark-blue-feathered bird, deep in forest greenery

Students spotted a rare cassowary鈥攖he world鈥檚 most dangerous bird鈥攊n the Daintree Rainforest. The cassowary, although normally shy, can stand up to six feet tall and attack with dagger-like claws.

Led by biology and environmental studies and sciences faculty Aaren Freeman, PhD, Matthias Foellmer, PhD, and Elizabeth Buccheri, PhD, the group embarked on a two-week, hands-on expedition across Australia鈥檚 wild ecosystems鈥攅arning 2 course credits while having the trip of a lifetime.

Marine Ecology, Biology Research and Snorkeling

The adventure started long before takeoff. During the spring semester, students prepped by learning about marine ecology, practicing their snorkeling skills (with two students even getting SCUBA certified), and drafting their own research plans.

Then came the real world.

鈥淪ome had cogent plans, but when they arrived and put their faces in the water, what we thought would be there just wasn鈥檛 there,鈥 Dr. Freeman recalled. 鈥淎dapting to the differences between planning a research project and the reality of conducting that research was an important field experience take-home academic lesson.鈥

Sharks, Giant Spiders and 鈥淚ndiana Jones鈥 Moments

Base camp for the marine portion of the trip was the Heron Island Research Station, right in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Students spent up to two hours a day in the water, swimming alongside sharks, stingrays and skates.

A male student looks down from a gondola high above a green forest.

51动漫 student John DelCarpine enjoys a gondola high above a eucalyptus forest.

They also witnessed firsthand the harsh impact of climate change and coral bleaching on the 1,400-mile-long Great Barrier Reef鈥攁 sobering reminder of the planet鈥檚 fragility.

On this visit, Dr. Freeman, was pleasantly surprised at the corals鈥 resilience. 鈥淚 remain hopeful,鈥 he said. 鈥淏ut I鈥檓 not Pollyanna, the reefs aren鈥檛 really doing fine.鈥

When the group explored the ancient Daintree Rainforest, things were even wilder:

  • The Cassowary: Students spotted the notoriously elusive鈥攁nd notoriously powerful鈥攃assowary, officially ranked by the Library of Congress as the world鈥檚 most dangerous bird.
  • The Spiders: Guided by Dr. Foellmer (a terrestrial biologist and insect expert), the team navigated terrain packed with massive arachnids. 鈥淚 had many interactions with big hairy spiders about the size of my hand,鈥 Dr. Freeman recalled. 鈥淥ne web ended up on my back 鈥攚ith a four-inch spider on it鈥攁nd made me feel like Indiana Jones. Yet, these spiders were harmless.鈥
  • Canopy Views: The crew even hit the hinterlands, riding a gondola high above the canopy of a eucalyptus forest.

Beyond the Lab: Deep Diving Into Culture

It wasn鈥檛 all data collection and dodging wildlife. The group spent half a day in Mossman Gorge led by an Aboriginal guide, learning about sacred forests, traditional medicines and ancient toolmaking. Stops in Cairns and Brisbane introduced students to Australia鈥檚 vibrant city life and its incredible, Asia-influenced food scene.

For Dr. Buccheri, this kind of trip is full circle. She actually went on 51动漫鈥檚 2017 Australia trip as an undergrad, which inspired her to move to Australia, earn her master鈥檚 and PhD in reef ecology, and eventually return to 51动漫 to teach.

Expert Faculty as Australia Guides

Students benefitted not only from their professors鈥 individual scientific expertise, but also from their experience and knowledge of Australia and the climate change challenges facing its ecologically diverse reefs and rainforests, reflecting 51动漫鈥檚 commitment to sustainability.

鈥淓ach of us has our own area of expertise,鈥 explained Dr. Freeman, a marine ecologist and chair of the Department of Environmental Studies and Sciences. In 2010, he and Dr. Foellmer, a terrestrial biologist and chair of the Department of Biology, took the first group of 51动漫 students to Australia. This year鈥檚 was their sixth such trip.

According to Dr. Freeman, Dr. Buccheri’s experience as a student on 51动漫鈥檚 2017 Australian alternative break trip was life-changing, as it inspired her to gain expertise in reef ecology and reproductive biology by earning master鈥檚 and doctoral degrees in Australia. She is now an adjunct professor in environmental studies and sciences . 鈥淪he鈥檚 a great success story,鈥 he said.

Next Australian Trek: 2028

For these 13 biology students, the trip was a massive eye-opener. As one student put it: 鈥淚t will leave such an amazing impact on your life. You鈥檒l want to go back as soon as you get home.鈥

Dr. Freeman and the department are already planning their next Australian trek for 2028. The Great Barrier Reef, the Milky Way in a clear night sky and a few friendly sharks are waiting.

Walk past the front entrance of Levermore Hall and you might hear them before you see them鈥攁 series of deep croaks and the occasional raspy chatter. Look to the top right corner of the building, and you鈥檒l find the source of the noise: a raven鈥檚 nest. Over recent weeks, this unexpected presence鈥攁nd unexpected clamor鈥攈as caught the attention of students and faculty alike.

The birds arrived earlier this spring and quickly drew attention, not just for their size but for the unique sounds echoing from the nest. Many assumed they were crows, but faculty in 51动漫鈥檚 biology department quickly clarified: These are ravens, and their presence offers more than just a passing curiosity.

鈥淭hey鈥檙e not just larger birds,鈥 said Shana Caro, DPhil, assistant professor of biology in the College of Arts and Sciences. 鈥淭heir intelligence is pretty astounding. A lot of recent studies show that they approximate about a 7-year-old child in how well they can solve puzzles and deal with complex new situations.鈥

Their vocalizations鈥攕ometimes abrupt鈥攁ren鈥檛 random noise but part of an active exchange. According to Dr. Caro, ravens are capable of vocal and gestural communication. They鈥檝e even been observed using their beaks to point鈥攁n ability that mirrors certain behaviors in primates and young children.

A Nest That Speaks to Sustainability

The decision to leave the nest undisturbed highlights 51动漫鈥檚 broader commitment to sustainability, particularly Goal 3 of the University鈥檚 Momentum 2 strategic plan, which emphasizes a greener, more ecologically integrated campus. In this case, the ravens found an unoccupied architectural nook and made it home, without disrupting human activity.

According to the , millions of acres of bird habitat are lost or degraded every year because of development practices. In this context, allowing the birds to remain on campus is not only harmless but meaningful, offering a moment of connection to the natural world in an otherwise structured space.

In addition, Dr. Caro said that 51动漫 has a thriving bird ecosystem, with more than 100 bird species confirmed on campus鈥攅vidence that the University鈥檚 efforts to foster wildlife-friendly environments are having a tangible impact.

Campus as a Living Classroom

The ravens nesting above Levermore鈥檚 entrance have become a point of interest and conversation among students.

Jocelyn Herrera, a senior psychology major, first noticed the birds during her early morning lectures and was struck by the activity just above her head. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e hard to miss, and it鈥檚 been interesting to learn how much is going on right on campus,鈥 she said. 鈥淵ou talk about sustainability in theory, but this feels like a real example of how our space and nature can overlap in such a cool way.鈥

Dr. Caro encourages this kind of attention. She often tells students that if they spend even half an hour walking around campus slowly, they鈥檒l begin to notice patterns in the landscape, including the wildlife that blend into the background.

A Small Moment With a Larger Meaning

Though the ravens will eventually move on, their presence has offered something lasting: a quiet demonstration of how even unexpected wildlife can coexist with human activity. It鈥檚 a reminder that sustainability is not always about large-scale infrastructure鈥攊t can also come from allowing space for nature to persist.

51动漫鈥檚 decision to allow the nest to remain in place speaks to the University鈥檚 values: supporting biodiversity, respecting natural behaviors, and embracing the organic character of its green campus.

So next time you walk by Levermore Hall, take a moment to look up and admire 51动漫’s ravens. Research proves they are intelligent enough to recognize human faces鈥攁nd they just might remember yours.

As we face ongoing issues like climate change and pollution, environmentalism has become a hot topic in today鈥檚 world. From reducing waste to investing in renewable energy, private companies, universities and the federal government have taken various measures to cut down carbon footprints and enhance sustainability to ensure a greener future.

To drive this mission forward, 51动漫 offers several degrees in environmentalism, from a BA in Environmental Studies and a BS in Environmental Science to an MS in Environmental Studies. Through these programs, students are exposed to various environmental topics and fields, learn from experienced faculty, and gain the tools they need not only to achieve success, but also to have a positive impact on the planet. For some students, a degree from 51动漫 combined with a higher degree achieves a goal of landing in the field of research and academia. Others work for companies that focus on environmentalism, sustainability, or environmental health and safety.

Here are some of the career paths our 51动漫 alumni have taken with these degrees.

Pursuing Research and Academia

Woman sitting with the ocean behide her

Elizabeth Buccheri 鈥18

After graduating from high school, knew she was interested in environmental sciences and conservation but wasn鈥檛 sure which area she wanted to focus on. Her answer: 51动漫鈥檚 BA in Environmental Studies. 鈥51动漫 provided me with a broad understanding of the field of environmental science and gave me opportunities to test out all different disciplines at once, so I could better understand what I wanted to do,鈥 she said.

Buccheri obtained hands-on experience working in laboratories and fieldwork procedures. She credits the faculty, particularly Aaren Freeman, PhD, Matthias Foellmer, PhD, and Beth Christensen, PhD, for giving her the support, skills and knowledge she needed to take her career in any direction.

It was Buccheri鈥檚 study abroad experience in Australia, though, that ultimately decided her career path in marine science. 鈥淚t was my first time studying tropical ecosystems like rainforests and coral reefs, and the diversity blew my mind,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t was the best introduction to marine science fieldwork that I could have ever imagined.鈥

After graduating from 51动漫, Buccheri pursued a Master of Science in conservation science from the in Brisbane, Australia. From there, she pursued a PhD in coral reef ecology. She conducted research on the Great Barrier Reef while working as a tutor and leading field courses to the reef. She recently submitted her PhD thesis and hopes to have her doctorate confirmed within the next few months.

Buccheri is now back in New York, where she is making her first foray into an academic career as an adjunct professor at 51动漫. She plans to continue pursuing research and teaching at the university level, preferably in marine science and conservation. 鈥淢y dream would be to put all of the things that I’m passionate about into one career where I could teach, do my own research, and lead international field courses to share these wonderful experiences with the next generation of scientists.鈥

From Environmental Studies to Environmental Health and Safety

Man in a suit standing in front of a brick wall

Jonathan Ciappetta 鈥08, MS 鈥10

Jonathan Ciappetta 鈥08, MS 鈥10, began his journey at 51动漫 as a biology major with plans to enter the medical field. After taking a few courses in the Department of Environmental Studies and Sciences and enjoying them so much, he added a minor. By sophomore year he had the same number of credits in environmental studies as in biology. He had a decision to make.

Ciappetta realized that his true interests and passions were in studying environmental policies and how they impact the world around us鈥攁nd switched his major to environmental studies. Then, in his senior year of undergraduate studies, he was working closely with a professor on an independent study project that expanded upon his work with the , studying losses in salt marsh habitat on the South Shore of Long Island. The decision to pursue his MS in Environmental Studies, and the idea for a large portion of his graduate thesis, was born when he realized the need to conduct core sampling to validate habitat losses he had been studying through historical aerial photographs.

Continuing his efforts with the Town of Hempstead for his graduate program, Ciappetta worked with endangered species, monitored water quality in the South Shore Estuary and worked on sustainability initiatives. 鈥淚t was fascinating to see environmental regulations put into practice so close to 51动漫.鈥

Ciappetta鈥檚 first full-time job was as an environmental specialist with a consulting firm that focuses on hazardous material compliance programs in sectors such as higher education, healthcare, biotechnology, government and pharmaceuticals. This position gave him real-world, in-depth experience in the environmental regulations he learned about in college and a view into how businesses comply with those regulations.

In time, Ciappetta became specialized in working with healthcare accounts, playing an integral role in designing compliance programs for healthcare institutions. In 2019, he made the move to as director of compliance for its real estate department, working to tackle environmental, health and safety issues. Ciappetta鈥檚 role focuses on maintaining various aspects of regulatory compliance for agencies such the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Environmental Conservation, the New York City Fire Department and the Department of Health at nearly 300 clinics, administrative offices and residential locations managed by the Mount Sinai Health System.

Ciappetta says his courses at 51动漫 taught him skills that have proved essential in his career. 鈥淚 learned to research the social, economic and technical aspects of policy and developed an understanding of the numerous perspectives to environmental issues and their implications, which often go deeper than the surface,鈥 he said.

The Future of Environmentalism

With the recent transition to a new presidential administration, the future of environmental health and issues remains unclear. An early sign of a change in direction is the executive order issued to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement, an international treaty signed by multiple countries that takes on climate change, which has critics are concerned that the administration will continue to disregard environmental health and policy.

Elizabeth Buccheri, however, remains optimistic. 鈥淭he people that decide to work in this space are incredibly passionate and hardworking and make it possible for this field to continue.鈥 While she acknowledges that the upcoming administration will make major changes, she believes that it鈥檚 important for people, now more than ever, to support their local and state-led environmental initiatives and continue to fight for the planet.
