Welcome to the Physician Assistant Studies programme. This is a 4-year programme leading to the award of BSc. Physician Assistant Studies. The programme is designed to train a critical group of professionals who are often the first line of management of patients and ideally work under the supervision of a qualified physician. The PA works in primary care and specialty care roles in both rural and urban settings. They also have a role to play in preventive Medicine, as well as in educational, research, and administrative activities. Graduates from the PA programme are certified by the Ghana Medical and Dental Council to exercise a level of autonomy in the performance of clinical responsibilities within Ghana’s health care delivery system.

The first two years of the programme are dedicated to preparing the student to cover foundational sciences and introduction to the profession. The third and fourth years focus on professional training. Students will be trained to take medical histories, perform physical examinations, order and interpret diagnostic tests, formulate a working diagnosis and implement a treatment/management plan. In the third year, the student will learn about Preventive Medicine, Evidence-Based Medicine, Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Diagnostic Methods, Health Administration as well as the foundation of Clinical Medicine. The final year will be predominantly cover clinical clerkships. Students will do clerkships in the major medical disciplines, including Internal Medicine, Surgery and its allied fields, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine and Primary Care. These clerkships will be done in primary, secondary and tertiary health facilities, under the supervision of specialists in the health institutions. The acquisition of surgical skills in both Surgery and Obstetrics will be particularly emphasized, in addition to the Primary Care and Family Medicine elements of the course. There are vocational training periods during the long vacations, during which the student will learn and develop practical skills. Each student will undertake a research project in an area of Clinical. The PA programme is suited for the student who has an interest in Medicine and a desire to care for the sick.

At the end of the programme, the PA degree holder should be able to:
1. Manage sub-district health activities and resources such as personnel, drugs and equipment
2. Assess the health status of community members, diagnose the sick and appropriately manage them using available resources and to give relevant operational support at the district level.
3. Identify cases of emergencies and cases beyond his scope of knowledge and skills and make referrals to the district level.
4. Educate the patient and the community on disease prevention, family planning, child health care and nutrition.
5. Identify community health problems and conduct research and communicate findings to community members as part of problem-solving activities.
6. Prepare and communicate regular reports on the primary health care (PHC) activities to the district health authority.
7. Assist the medical doctor to improve the care of patients at all levels.

Philosophy

This philosophy is consistent with the 51¶¯Âþ College Mission Statement of the University and the Philosophy of nursing in general; which inculcates caring for the individual clients, family,Ìý group or community placed under her/his care as unique persons with peculiar needs. We believe in nursing our clients with the fear of God with the highest integrity, irrespective of colour, belief, race, poor or rich. We believe in life promotion or otherwise life preservation, restoration and rehabilitation; physically, socially, mentally and spiritually whenever possible, or otherwise where death is inevitable to aid the client die peacefully through negotiating peace with God.

Objectives

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program prepares the graduate to:

  1. Integrate concepts from the Arts and Sciences in promoting health and managing complex nursing care situations.
  2. Apply Leadership concepts, skills, and decision making in the provision, and oversight of nursing practice in a variety of settings.
  3. Translate principles of patient safety and quality improvement t into the delivery of high quality care.
  4. Appraise, critically summarize and translate current research into evidence-based nursing practice.
  5. Integrate knowledge, processes, and skills from nursing science; information and patient care technologies; and communication tools to facilitate clinical decision-making, and the delivery of safe and effective nursing care.
  6. Describe the effects of health policy, economic, legal, political and socio-cultural factors on the delivery of and advocacy for equitable health care.
  7. Demonstrate effective professional communication and collaboration to optimize healthcare.
  8. Deliver and advocate for health promotion and disease prevention strategies at the individual, family, community levels.
  9. Demonstrate value-based, professional behaviors that integrate altruism, autonomy, integrity, social justice and respect for diversity and human dignity.
  10. Demonstrate critical thinking, clinical decision making, and psychomotor skills necessary for the delivery of Ìý Ìý Ìý competent, evidence-based, holistic, and compassionate care to patients across life span.

  1. ´¡.ÌýÌýÌýÌýMATURE APPLICANT :

Applicants must be at least 25years old at the time of submitting the application. Two categories of mature applicants would be considered:

  • State registered Nurses (SRN) will be entered at level 200
  • Registered General Nurses will be entered at level 200
  • Candidates shall have a minimum CGPA of 3.25 or better from accredited institution of Nursing with a pass in good standing with the nursing and midwifery Council of Ghana.

Program information

  1. Eligible students shall attend all lectures, tutorials, mentorship discussions, seminars and practicals and undertake all other assignments as approved by the university.
  2. Students shall be expected to attend other activities prescribed for the courses they offer.
  3. A student who is absent for a cumulative period of 21days from all lectures shall be deemed to have withdrawn from the courses.
  4. Each course shall normally be completed in one semester.
  5. ÌýThere are 2 (Two) Levels of Students for BSc. In nursing:

Patient care services: Nursing / Practicals / skills acquisition

The department has designed and developed state of the art programmes / courses to assist the student nurse develop and acquire practical skills / demonstrate critical thinking, clinical decision making necessary for the delivery of competent, evidence-based, holistic, and compassionate care to patients across the life span. The following briefly demonstrates the process:

ON CAMPUS: CAMPUS CLINICAL EXPERIENCE

  • Skills Lap room: the skills lab. is necessary to re-enforce and update specific nursing skills. (E.g. Bed making skills, Using Pyxis or Med-Select automated medication system to administer medications, accurate data collection from client, family and staff, etc.)
  • Simulation Room: the simulation lab provides a realistic client care, experience with human client simulators that react physiologically to nursing intervention.
  • Health Education Computer Lab: Health education computer lab is necessary for required class work, enrichment or absence make up hours. Electronic data are kept from companies / manufacturers on health education computers for student enrichment & conferences, including DVDs and CDs.
  • Video Equipment Lab: in addition, the school has video equipment for demonstration or tutorials.

ÌýOUTSIDE CAMPUS: CLINICAL EXPERIENCE

The department has memoranda of understanding with some hospitals in Accra, Cape Coast and Koforidua where our students shall be posted for clinical experience during their training. In addition, students shall have preceptors who have undergone special preparation on PUC’s Philosophy, mission, vision and goals necessary for the delivery of competent, evidence-based, holistic, and compassionate care to patients.
